Dirk Vandewalle, associate professor of government, spoke with WCAX-TV News on August 23 about the challenges facing Libya as the Gadhafi regime finally appears to be falling.

“Certainly now with the invasion of Bab al-Aziziya, which is really the center point of Gadhafi’s empire, this is really the very end,” he said.

Vandewalle, author of A History of Modern Libya (2006), has been a sought-after expert providing commentary to multiple international news outlets since the unrest in the small North African country began in February. In April, he testified before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He has also served as Political Advisor to United Nations Special Advisor Ian Martin, who is coordinating the U.N.’s post-conflict planning for Libya.
