The Hopkins Center for the Arts moves to the crossroads of contemporary theater as the New York Theatre Workshop takes up its annual three-week residency August 1 through 20—the company’s 20th summer sojourn at Dartmouth.

Among the playwrights whose works-in-progress will be presented this year are two acclaimed actors who have also scored high praise as authors: Ruben Santiago-Hudson, a Tony- and Obie-award-winning stage actor currently in the hit TV show Castle and author of the award-winning play and HBO movie Lackawanna Blues; and Tony-nominated actor Colman Domingo, star of Broadway shows Passing Strange and Scottsboro Boys and author of the award-winning A Boy and His Soul. Other playwrights in the lineup are Betty Shamieh, the 2011 UNESCO Young Artist for Intercultural Dialogue, and Catherine Rush and Adrian Blue, a couple whose work as playwrights, directors, and performers has focused on the nexus of the deaf and hearing worlds. Performances are held on Saturdays, August 6, 13, and 20.
Two new projects are workshopped each week, and students in the theater course “Drama in Performance” are assigned to help as direction and production assistants, researchers, and sometimes performers. They also learn a critical response method they employ with the artists after each shows.
