The October 11 Republican Debate at Dartmouth will be streamed live on Bloomberg.com, washingtonpost.com/debate, and Bloomberg Mobile. The pre-debate panel discussion, “Leading Voices: What’s at Stake in the Republican Debate,” will be broadcast live via Dartmouth’s YouTube channel. A panel of leading journalists and educators will provide a preview of the issues and the political horse race heading into the October 11 Republican Presidential Debate at Dartmouth.
Veteran journalist and Dartmouth Trustee Morton Kondracke ’60, executive editor at Roll Call, will moderate “Leading Voices: What’s at Stake in the Republican Debate,” a panel discussion which will take place immediately preceding the debate.
The event, to be held at 5 p.m. in the Hopkins Center’s Moore Theater, is another in the College’s Leading Voices series, which brings influential thinkers to campus.
“We hope to give the Dartmouth and Upper Valley community an informed preview of the Republican debate, featuring College faculty and Dartmouth alumni journalists who are experts on national and New Hampshire politics,” says Kondracke. “We’ll discuss the country’s plight, President Obama’s chances of re-election, and what the Republicans (individually and collectively) are offering as answers to the nation’s angst. We’ll analyze the overall GOP race and try to assess what it will take to win the New Hampshire primary.”

Dartmouth faculty panelists are Linda Fowler, professor of government and holder of the Frank J. Reagan Chair in Policy Studies, and Matthew J. Slaughter, associate dean for the MBA Program and the Signal Companies’ Professor of Management at theTuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
Kondracke will question the panelists, and then take questions from the audience.

Morton Kondracke ’60
Kondracke has been a national journalist for 41 years, the last 18 years as executive editor and columnist at Roll Call, which covers Congress. He has worked for a number of media outlets, including The New Republic, Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal, and Fox and ABC television. In 2010, he was elected to Dartmouth’s Board of Trustees. He received the Daniel Webster Award for Public Service from the Dartmouth Club of Washington in 1997.David Shribman ’76
Executive editor of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette since 2003, Shribman has previously worked at a number of media outlets including The Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. Hewas awarded the Pulitzer Prize in journalism in 1995 for his coverage of Washington and the American political scene. His column, “My Point,” is syndicated nationally. He is an emeritus member of Dartmouth’s Board of Trustees and of the Board of Visitors of the Nelson A. Rockefeller Center for the Social Sciences.Joseph Rago ’05
Rago is an editorial board member at The Wall Street Journal. He previously was a senior editorial writer and joined the Journal in 2005 as an assistant editorial features editor. Fowler, who has been at Dartmouth since 1995, is a scholar of presidential politics and U.S. campaign and election strategy. She is often sought by news outlets for insight during national elections. Her expertise has been featured in articles by the BBC, CBS, NBC, National Public Radio, CNN, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune. Her research interests include legislative politics, public policy, interest groups and participation. She teaches government courses and was a Guggenheim fellow in 2005.Matthew J. Slaughter
Slaughter, a member of the Tuck faculty since 2002, is currently a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research; senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations; and holds a number of other appointments, including membership in the U.S. State Department’s Advisory Committee on International Tax Policy Forum. He has also served other boards and agencies, including the Council of Economic Advisers, the Federal Reserve Board, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and National Academy of Sciences.
