Reports began pouring in Thursday that former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was dead.

Dirk Vandewalle, an associate professor of government who served as an adviser this summer to the United Nations’ coordinator of post-conflict planning for Libya, spoke to The Financial Times not long after the news broke.

“In the sense that this ends a period, it’s also the beginning of a very difficult period for the NTC (National Transitional Council),” Vandewalle said. “It’s time for the new government to move forward. It’s an opportunity.”
