You may someday make phone calls just by thinking about it. It’s already possible with the neural phone, created by Dartmouth Professor of Computer Science Andrew Campbell and his team of colleagues and students. Their National Science Foundation-supported research was recently featured in CBS News Sunday Morning’s cover story, “The Next Step in Bionics.”

The neural phone employs a headset that picks up brain signals from the scalp and streams the raw EEG signals to an iPhone. These neural signals are a response to photographs of contacts displayed on the phone. The device then calls the chosen contact without the user ever touching the phone.

The research team is spearheading new applications in health care, education, and social interactions where smartphone-sensing technology is the central systems component.
