“I think the landscape is very different [today],” he said. “In the ’70s, there were probably fewer than 25 medications available for treating cancer, and now there are literally hundreds.”
Still, Israel admitted that oncologists have a long way to go.
“There remain many challenges … where the impact of therapy frankly has been quite modest over those 40 years.”
Israel is director of the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and professor of pediatrics and genetics at Dartmouth Medical School.
