Many scientists are now using Microsoft Kinect, a video game motion sensor, to aid their research. Wired magazine turned to Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences Bob Hawley for thoughts on using the device for scientific work.

One of the challenges, he noted, was adapting technology designed for indoors to the challenges of the field. Hawley is sure that researchers can find ways. “We’ll put the Kinect through its paces in the lab to make sure it’s up to snuff,” he said.

Hawley, who studies glaciers, is trying to figure out a way to use the device for creating time-lapse films of melting ice sheets.
