The Aires, Dartmouth’s oldest a cappella group, recorded “Calling My Children Home” during a visit to the UN headquarters earlier this month. The song focuses on a family separation, a problem common in the Horn of Africa as people scatter to find food during the region’s worst drought in more than 60 years.
The UNDP has now released a video of the Aires’ performance, with an introduction featuring several members.
“We wanted to give something back,” Ethan Weinberg ’12 told the UN News Service. Throughout fall 2011, the Aires were on the national stage with NBC’s hit a cappella competition The Sing-Off and finished as runners up. “We have a larger following now, and we wanted to use our reach for a good cause.”
