Sō Percussion—fresh, inspired leaders of a movement that’s brought percussion from the orchestra’s fringes to center stage—comes to the Hop for a concert on Friday, April 20, at 8 p.m., in Spaulding Auditorium.

The quartet’s program includes two works by Steve Reich—Music for Pieces of Wood (1973) and Mallet Quartet (2009)—which Sō co-commissioned. The program also includes the world premiere of a new Hop-commissioned work by young UK-born composer Oscar Bettison, who is acclaimed for exploring the boundaries of pitch and noise, classical and rock, convention and invention.
The concert is part of a week-long residency which includes a free workshop on Tuesday, April 17, at 6 p.m., in the Cynthia-Reeves New England gallery in Hanover, N.H. The event is a chance to hear Dartmouth students tackle Sō Percussion repertoire, under the quartet’s guidance, and also to hear Sō members share their approach to percussive music-making.
