Sean Furey ’04, Thayer ’05 and ’06, will head to London with the U.S. track and field team next month to compete in his first Olympic Games after finishing fourth in the javelin at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., on Monday, June 25. Although the former Dartmouth football player didn’t finish in the top three, Furey had met the Olympic “A” standard two-and-a-half weeks ago, unlike the top two finishers, with a throw of 271-5 feet and therefore locked up his first trip to the Olympics.
After falling short in the in the 10,000-meter event on June 22, Ben True ’08 made an impression on the 5,000-meter field on Monday. He posted the third-best qualifying time and was third in his heat, running a 13:42.12 to advance to the final. True will compete for a spot on the U.S. team against 15 of the top qualifiers in the final heat on Thursday, June 28, at 10:38 p.m. EST.
Dartmouth women’s track & field’s Abbey D’Agostino ’14 is one step closer to representing the United States in London after winning the first 5,000-meter semifinal heat. D’Agostino posted the top qualifying time in the event, 15:41.14, and competes against a field of 15 other runners in the final heat on Thursday, June 28, at 10:15 p.m. EST.
The road to the Olympics has ended for Alexi Pappas ’12 and Adam Nelson ’97. The All-American Pappas, who captured third place at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, did not qualify for the final in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. And Nelson, a two-time Olympic silver medalist in the shot put, failed to qualify for the final heat.
