In an interview with Vermont Public Radio (VPR), Jeff James, the Howard Gilman Director of the Hopkins Center, previews Dartmouth’s Year of the Arts. This yearlong celebration will showcase new initiatives, artist residencies, major exhibitions, and performances, including the opening of the Black Family Visual Arts Center in September. The center, along with the Hood Museum of Art and Hopkins Center for the Arts (Hop) comprise Dartmouth’s Arts District. Both the Hop and the Hood are planning expansions and renovations.
As VPR notes, the Year of the Arts coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Hop. In speaking about the history of the Hop, James explains that the arts have long been a central part of a liberal arts education at Dartmouth.
James describes a few of the many events that will take place this year, including a performance by the Handspring Puppet Company. James also tells VPR that he is looking forward to the many student performances and productions planned throughout the year.
