CNN, in its coverage of likely GOP nominee Mitt Romney’s visit to Israel, turns to Randall Balmer, chair of Dartmouth’s Department of Religion, for his insights about the goal of Romney’s trip.

“I think Mitt Romney is going to Israel certainly to court the Jewish vote,” Balmer tells CNN. Also, Balmer points out to CNN, there is another group of voters that Romney is trying to sway. “The constituency he wants to impress is the evangelicals, people who have an unequivocal support for Israel,” Balmer says. “This is the constituency that was quite suspicious of him in the course of the primaries, and in many ways he hasn’t fully won them over.”
