Pepin of The Geisel School of Medicine analyzed the only authenticated photograph of Emily Dickinson, taken when the poet was 17 years old, and a more recently discovered photograph, taken in 1859, that is believed to be of Dickinson. After analyzing the features of the women in each photograph, Pepin concluded that the two images are of the same woman, according to the Valley News.

The newspaper notes that Pepin used Photoshop computer technology to compare the images. “If you look at a bunch of measurements and they all line up, that’s powerful,” Pepin told the Valley News. “I don’t claim it’s absolute, but based on the measurements we use in ophthalmology, they’re very similar. I think this is Emily Dickinson.”
