An article in The Atlantic co-authored by Shannon Brownlee, an instructor at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI), describes a recent report issued from TDI as offering medical students “a glimpse of the kind of doctors they’re likely to become, depending where they do their residency.”

The report, the article explains, looks at variations in patient care among 23 of the top teaching hospitals in the United States. “Practice style varies from hospital to hospital, and gets transmitted to young residents through what’s often called the ‘hidden curriculum’,” write Brownlee and co-author Joe Colucci. “It’s one of the most important differences between residency programs.”
