Wright, the author of Those Who Have Borne the Battle: A History of America’s Wars and Those Who Fought Them, writes about the country’s memorials to the veterans of Vietnam, Korea, and World War II. He notes the need for two more national memorials: to the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, and to the veterans of World War I.
Wright says “the human face of these wars needs to become part of our nation’s memory—wars do have real human costs. Forgetting wars is bad history. Forgetting sacrifice is irresponsible history.”
