In an NPR story about fact-checking during political campaigns, Assistant Professor of Government Brendan Nyhan suggests that having a fact checker go on TV right after a televised speech—“before immediate spinning of who won or lost”— might give the process greater impact. An alternative: Splitting the debate into segments, with intermissions devoted to fact checking. Either way, checking on the truth of the candidates’ statements is “hard to do on the fly,” Nyhan says.
