The website LiveScience writes about a new study, co-authored by Dartmouth’s Thalia Wheatley, that found a striking similarity across cultures between the way people express emotions like anger, sadness, and happiness in music and the way they express the same emotions in movement.

“The kinds of dynamics you find in movement, you find also in music, and they’re used in the same way to provide the same kind of meaning,” says Wheatley, assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences.

Working with Wheatley on the study were Beau Sievers, a PhD student in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences; Larry Polansky, the Jacob H.
