Dartmouth senior and music major Paul Finkelstein ’13 will be the conductor in an introductory wind ensemble program for young musicians, grades five through eight, from the Upper Valley and surrounding regions. The program, called Dartmouth Youth Winds, will run from January 12 to March 2, 2013.
“When I was in middle school, I played in a community ensemble where I got to work with people of all ages,” says Finkelstein. “The mentorship that you can receive from a more experienced musician is something you can’t replace. I think it’s amazing for us to pass that experience on to a younger generation of musicians.”
Under the direction of Matthew Marsit, the director of bands at Dartmouth, the Hopkins Center for the Arts pilot program will feature Dartmouth student mentors in each of the instrumental sections.
Students in the eight-week program will participate in rehearsals and coaching sessions, occasional one-on-one instruction, and a final performance on Saturday, March 2, at 2 p.m. in the Top of the Hop at the Hopkins Center. The performance is free and open to the public.
