The conservative leaders’ denials—including a recent statement from Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe that he plans to revise the statement acknowledging government complicity in Japan’s World War II sex slave program—are counterproductive, Lind writes.

“A country that has been a model global citizen for decades should draw the clearest possible distinction between good behavior and bad,” writes Lind, an associate professor of government at Dartmouth. Instead, she says, the denials are keeping Japan’s “World War II-era crimes in the spotlight.”
