William Kamkwamba ’14 captured a lot of attention at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, this week when a new film about him took the Grand Jury Award for documentary feature, according to The Austin Chronicle.

The film, William and the Windmill, documents Kamkwamba’s childhood in Malawi and how, at age 14, he built a windmill out of junk parts to bring electricity to his village and save his family from famine. The film also focuses on Kamkwamba’s life after childhood, including his matriculation at Dartmouth in 2011, publication of his book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and a TED talk in 2009.
