For a “Talk of the Town” piece, The New Yorker spoke with Professor Donald E. Pease about Theodor Geisel, Class of 1925, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss, and how Seuss’ story The Zax provides a parable about political stalemate that has relevance to the federal government’s current budgetary situation.

Pease, the Ted and Helen Geisel Third Century Professor in the Humanities, chair of the Dartmouth Liberal Studies Program, and author of a biography of Geisel, said that The Zax, published in 1961, “has lots of applicability to the present impasse in Washington, D.C., where neither side seems willing to budge.”
