“We should expect our daughters to have the same career potential as our sons,” writes Jane E.G. Lipson, the Albert W. Smith Professor of Chemistry, in an opinion piece published by Quartz.

However, she points out, a recent study from Yale found that academic scientists, both male and female, reached different conclusions about job candidates depending on the gender listed by the applicant.

There is a simple test that would end the wage gap between female and male employees, says Lipson.

“If we can bring awareness of gender stereotyping to the forefront of the decision-making process in a concrete way,” she writes, “it could shift bias from the realm of the unconscious to that of the conscious. There, it would be easier to change.”
