The contest, which called for videos showing how the world of math surrounds us, was created by Dartmouth’s Department of Mathematics and the Neukom Institute for Computational Science to increase public interest in mathematics, according to the newspaper.
“At the beginning, almost every child likes math,” Daniel Rockmore, chair of the mathematics department and director of the Neukom Institute, tells the Valley News. “They don’t see it as a loaded concept. They see it as problem solving, counting, shapes, a puzzle.”
Rockmore, the William H. Neukom 1964 Distinguished Professor of Computational Science, continues, “I want Math-O-Vision to generate a joyous interest in the subject again, and I suspect that next year, we’ll have more entries, once people have examples from this year of what a math video is.”
