Taking Baseball Language, Gear, to Nicaragua (Valley News)

Valley News sports editor Donald Mahler writes about Jack Turco and his project to bring baseball equipment to the children of El Hormiguero, Nicaragua, a town that Turco, co-director of the Dartmouth College Health Service, knows from years of doing service work at the local health clinic.

Turco began traveling to El Hormiguero as part of a William Jewett Tucker Foundation initiative in which Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital physicians donated two weeks of their time attending to residents of the town. Along the way, he got the idea of bringing gear to the baseball-loving youths of the town.

“These hand-me-downs and used equipment will mean so much,” Turco tells the Valley News. “For these kids, their dream of making it big would be if they could just play on the town team.”
