Each June, Dartmouth Now profiles a number of students who are about to graduate. New stories will be added each day through Thursday .
Greg Buzzard ’13 relishes the broad range of experiences he has enjoyed at Dartmouth. "I learned so much here about so many different things," he says. "I've been a student of the Chinese and Spanish languages, of American Indian law, of linguistics, of Native American histories and cultures, as well as many other areas of study."
A citizen of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, Buzzard regards both Warrensburg, Mo., and Marble City, Okla., as hometowns. His first trip outside the Midwest was to visit Dartmouth. This was made possible through the school's Native Fly-In Program, which introduces Native students from all over the country to Dartmouth.
"I came to this school with a very limited worldview," says Buzzard. "The vast diversity of individuals, experiences, and opportunities at this school was really my introduction to the world beyond my community.
"I was struck by how welcoming the Native and non-Native communities here were to me, as well as impressed by the array of academic opportunities," he says.
Majoring in Native American Studies, Buzzard also immersed himself in campus activities such as Native Americans at Dartmouth—an organization on campus for all students interested in the school's Native community. He was active in the group all four years, serving as co-president during his senior year.
Buzzard is particularly proud of his involvement with the William Jewett Tucker Foundation's Alternative Spring Break program (ASB), a platform that enables students to contribute meaningful service to the community and foster cross-cultural relationships. "This year, I helped design and lead a new ASB to Denver, Colo., where our group worked with the city's urban Native American community."
He has his sights set on attending law school in the near future and is seeking a job in the interim that might serve as an introduction to the profession.
Reflecting on his last four years, Buzzard says, "I think the biggest takeaway from Dartmouth has been how it has expanded my horizons. My experiences here have been transformative in many ways. I wouldn't have had any of these incredible opportunities anywhere else."
