On June 7, Abbey D’Agostino ’14 won the 5,000-meter event at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She is now a four-time national champion, having previously captured the 5,000-meter outdoor title in 2012 and indoor titles in both the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters at the 2013 NCAA indoor championships.

The Valley News spoke with D’Agostino in the days leading up to her 5,000-meter race in Oregon and profiled the standout runner the morning of her championship run.

D’Agostino’s career started out slowly at Dartmouth, as the Topsfield, Mass. native suffered an injury during her first cross country season, the Valley News notes. But once she was able to compete again, her times began to get faster. “Abbey is a special kid,” assistant track and field coach Mark Coogan tells the Valley News. “You could see how she trained in the morning. Her times were trending up. You could just see she had something.”

As a sophomore, D’Agostino finished third at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, the article notes. “I realized I could compete with other top runners,” D’Agostino told the Valley News. “That first time I went to nationals, I really felt like I belonged.”
