For the 22nd consecutive year, dozens of theater professionals are gathering at Dartmouth for a three-week New York Theatre Workshop residency.

The summer residency began July 29 and runs through August 18. The artists will present six theatrical works in progress and also participate in public discussions about their work and process. All of the performances, as well as the public discussions, will take place in Warner Bentley Theater, located in the lower level of the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The public discussions, which are free and open to the public, will take place at noon on July 30, August 6, and August 13.
The artists participating in this summer’s workshop have worked in Broadway and Off Broadway productions and in major theaters in the United States and abroad, and have earned Tony and Drama Desk Award nominations, and other top theater honors. Among the artists participating this year are Tom Hewitt, who has starred in numerous Broadway shows and appeared on television’s Law and Order, Third Watch, Frasier, and All My Children; and Sheila Tousey, whose numerous stage, film and television credits include co-starring in the 1992 film Thunderheart and, more recently, at the Guthrie Theater in Marsha Norman’s adaptation of Louise Erdrich’s Master Butchers Singing Club.
Throughout the three weeks, a team led by playwright Gabriel Jason Dean and director Ed Sylvanus Iskander will workshop a play that explores cross-cultural issues raised by the Afghani practice of bacha bazi or “boy play,” in which beautiful young boys, dressed as women, dance for and are prostituted to wealthy warlords.
