Pro-Baby, But Stingy With Money (The New York Times)

In a column about the decline of the U.S. birth rate, Eduardo Porter of The New York Times turns to Dartmouth’s Bruce Sacerdote ’90, the Richard S. Braddock 1963 Professor in Economics, for his expertise.

The recession and the economy’s slow recovery have prompted families to delay or forgo having children because of the cost, writes Porter. “It is all about the costs and the opportunity costs for women,” Sacerdote tells the Times. Sacerdote, James Feyrer, an associate professor of economics, and Ariel Dora Stern ’05, published a study in 2008 about fertility rates in developed countries, the article notes.
