Where You Stand Depends on Where You Sit (The Wall Street Journal)

In The Wall Street Journal’s online forum The Experts, Dartmouth’s H. Gilbert Welch responds to the question: Two years from now, what will doctors be saying about the Affordable Care Act?

In his response, Welch, a professor of medicine at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, writes, “How doctors feel about these changes will likely depend on who they care for now. In other words: Where you stand on the Act depends on where you sit.”

Welch explains, “Those doctors who provide care to the well-insured portion of the population will see little effect from these changes.” He adds that, “Those doctors who care for less fortunate populations will be more enthusiastic,” and that others “may see patients they’ve never seen before—patients who have not seen a doctor for years, but now can.”
