Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino ’14, a member of the Big Green women’s track and field and cross country teams, graces the cover of the September 2013 issue of Running Times. The magazine documents D’Agostino’s transformation from average high school runner to four-time NCAA champion, noting that she missed qualifying for the 2012 London Olympics in the 5,000-meters by only 0.19 seconds.

As D’Agostino’s running career at Dartmouth unfolded, her coach, Mark Coogan, took notice of her developing talent. “She’s very smart; she thinks during races,” Coogan tells the magazine. “She’s patient. A lot of people can’t run a 5K; they are wasting all this energy, zigzagging in and out, instead of just running for 2 miles to get where you belong. She’s really good at that. She trusts that it’s all going to happen, which is cool.”

D’Agostino, whose interest in sports psychology led her to major in psychology, says staying positive is important. “It’s a competition with myself for staying positive. The ultimate fear is allowing any negative thoughts to subvert my confidence.”
