Dartmouth’s ‘Yeti’ Robot Explores Arctic Dangers

As a guest on NHPR’s Word of MouthThayer School of EngineeringProfessor Laura Ray describes the design, function, and importance of Yeti, a robot that assists scientists working in polar regions.

Yeti is an autonomous vehicle that is used to detect and map potentially dangerous crevasses in ice sheets, explains NHPR. Ray, the Yeti project leader, says robots are an important tool used prior to manned expeditions. “A robot you can send out to do such surveys and it can bring back the data so that you can look at it in the safety of your camp.”
