Toxin in U.S. Rice Causes Genetic Damage (Discover Magazine)

Rice, shown by Dartmouth researchers to contain dangerously high amounts of arsenic, has now been directly linked to arsenic-induced genetic damage, blogger Deborah Blum reports in Discover Magazine.

Although the new research, reported last week in Scientific Reports, is the first to show a direct link, past studies have shown that arsenic in rice is absorbed into the body, Blum reports, citing a 2011 study by Margaret Karagas, an epidemiologist and professor of community and family medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine, and her Dartmouth colleagues.

“The Dartmouth group looked at pregnant women in the New Hampshire area who were eating rice on a regular basis,” writes Blum. “They found that arsenic levels in these women’s urine were up to 56 percent higher than in women who avoided eating rice.”
