A story in the Valley News features one incoming first-year student’s unusual journey to Dartmouth this week. Cedar Farwell ’17 traveled by canoe up the Connecticut River from his home in Hartland, Vt.

Farwell, whose parents are both Dartmouth alumni, made the trip with his mother, Edie Farwell ’83, the Valley News reports.

When a farmer observed them and asked why they were paddling upstream, Cedar Farwell told him, “We’re going to Dartmouth College,” to which the farmer replied, “That’s good, go to Dartmouth College; they’ll teach you to paddle downstream next time!”according to the Valley News.
