Major League Baseball’s Detroit Tigers have named Brad Ausmus ’91 the team’s new manager, reports Bloomberg. Ausmus played 18 Major League Baseball seasons—from 1993 through 2010—as a catcher, but his new role with the Tigers is his first stint as a manager.
“You could tell he was going to be a manager many years ago,” Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski tells Bloomberg. “He actually provided more leadership than many young players would when he was out there. Being a catcher, he was always in charge of the operations on the field.”
Ausmus spent the past three years as special assistant of baseball operations for the San Diego Padres, Bloomberg reports.
