New York Times columnist Philip Galanes writes about a luncheon at which groundbreaking comedian, actor, and writer Mindy Kaling ’01 and comedian and star Roseanne Barr talk about their careers and how they like to spend their free time.

Kaling, a best-selling author and the creator and star of The Mindy Project on Fox, tells Galanes that she got her start in Hollywood writing a play (Matt and Ben, about actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) and then writing for The Office. Eventually, she knew that she needed to start her own show, she says, “because no one is going to write a show for a chubby brown woman. It’s hard enough to make it if you’re a thin, conventionally attractive woman. I also knew I was only going to be good at certain things.”
