Savage, director of the Dartmouth Center on Addiction, Recovery and Education, tells Consumer Reports that opioids such as methadone, oxycodone, and hydrocodone can be safe if used as prescribed. However, she says, “they are powerful medications that need to be respected. Taking someone else’s medication, combining them with the wrong thing, or just taking too much on a single occasion can be a fatal mistake.”
