Pick a Team, Not Just a Doctor (The Wall Street Journal)

The Wall Street Journal asked a group of experts, including Dartmouth’s Elliott Fisher, to weigh in on the following question: What is the biggest mistake patients make when picking a primary-care doctor?

“Remember: It’s not just about the doctor,” says Fisher, the director of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice. “The first thing to keep in mind is that no matter whom you choose as your doctor, your health and your health-care decisions will require your attention and engagement: Choose a doctor who will pay attention to what matters to you, not just what’s the matter with you. And it’s about the team. No physician can provide outstanding care on his or her own. The quality of their office systems, colleagues, and supporting staff are important.”
