Associate Professor of Government Jennifer Lind, in an opinion piece in The Asahi Shimbun, says China’s muted reaction to the crisis in Ukraine is the result of competing interests—“interests that would lead Beijing to oppose Russian military intervention on the one hand, but also American political intervention on the other.”

There are “interests churning deep below the surface of Beijing’s seemingly quiet waters,” Lind writes.
