American college students need to be literate not only in the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math, but also in languages and cultures outside the U.S., write Dartmouth’s Leslie Henderson and George R. Trumbull IV in an Al Jazeera America opinion piece.

“The future—of STEM, of the liberal arts and of the U.S. workforce—belongs to students both scientifically literate and intimately familiar with the other parts of the world,” write the authors.

Henderson is the senior associate dean for faculty affairs, a professor of physiology and a professor of biochemistry at the Geisel School of Medicine, and Trumbull is an associate professor of history. Both are Dartmouth Public Voices fellows.
