The birth of the celebrated Native American sculptor Allan Houser, who was an artist-in-residence at Dartmouth in 1979, is being commemorated with an exhibition of his work at the Maffei Arts Plaza in front of the Black Family Visual Arts Center, the Valley News says, noting also that a show of Houser’s drawings will be on view in the fall at the Hopkins Center for the Arts.

“Like any artist, Houser was influenced by myriad sources, which in his case included the history of the Apache and their visual and performing arts, the landscapes of the vast open Southern Plains and the mountains of the Southwest and such 20th-century sculptors as Henry Moore, Jean Arp, and Constantin Brancusi,” writes the newspaper.
