In an opinion piece published by Politico, Professor Randall Balmer writes about the rise of the religious right.

“The tale goes something like this: Evangelicals, who had been politically quiescent for decades, were so morally outraged by Roe that they resolved to organize in order to overturn it,” writes Balmer, the Mandel Family Professor in the Arts & Sciences and chair of the Department of Religion.

The tale, he writes, is a myth that is often repeated by leaders of the conservative coalition, but “quickly collapses under historical scrutiny.” The real organizing principle, he says, was maintaining segregation.
