A study led by Geisel’s Christopher Amos discovered that a version of a gene linked to increased risk of breast and ovarian cancers also raises the risk of lung cancer, reports TIME.

“We didn’t see an association to lung cancer with other BRCA2 variants, only this particular one. What we found is a new effect of BRCA2 on lung cancer,” Amos tells TIME.

Amos is a professor of community and family medicine, a professor of genetics, and the associate direction for population sciences at the Norris Cotton Cancer Center.
