America’s promise to protect its allies in East Asia is under increasing scrutiny as China continues to assert its claims to islands in the East China and South China seas, writes Associate Professor of Government Jennifer Lind in a Foreign Affairs opinion piece. “Many commentators argue that the United States must enhance deterrence by making clearer and stronger commitments to its allies,” she writes.

To solve its problems in East Asia, says Lind, the U.S. government should look to a case from the past that it managed well: West Berlin during the Cold War.
