The rankings are based on eight categories: six-year graduation rate, freshmen retention rate, student-to-faculty ratio, percentage of classes taught by teaching assistants, average entrance ACT score, number of campus organizations, number of academic programs, and Forbes ranking.
Also a factor is “net price,” which Great Value Colleges explains as the total cost of attendance minus the average financial aid package; those listed as “Great Value Colleges” this year all come in “under $22,000—roughly the price tag of a typical year of college. At $20,900, Dartmouth ranks third out of the top 25 private institutions for net price,” writes the website.
Dartmouth, the website notes, is an Ivy League institution known for combining liberal arts study with scholarship in research. “In addition to its more than 50 majors, the school also has several graduate programs, including professional schools for medicine, engineering, and business,” writes the website. “Dartmouth gives out more than $75 million in scholarships each year, and about 50 percent of students can expect to receive some type of scholarship (this does not include what you could receive in federal or state loans). Dartmouth has a graduation rate of 95 percent, a freshmen retention rate of 98 percent, and a very comfortable student-to-faculty ratio of 8:1.”
