In a story about whether computers could fake a painting well enough to fool algorithms designed to detect forgeries, The Atlantic turns for comment to Daniel Rockmore, the William H. Neukom 1964 Distinguished Professor of Computational Science and director of the Neukom Institute for Computational Science.

Rockmore tells the magazine that while certain computer programs could recognize, for instance, an authentic Jackson Pollack, they probably wouldn’t be able to “reverse engineer” one.

“Going from pixels to the actual painting strikes me as complicated,” Rockmore tells the magazine. “But you wouldn’t want to say it could never be done.”
