“I am very excited to be a recipient of this award because it represents the highest honor to Chinese students studying abroad, and recognizes my scientific achievements here at Dartmouth—this means a lot to me,” says Deng, a biochemist. “The prize will also provide me with opportunities to attend conferences and scientific training courses. I thank my thesis adviser, Jamie Moseley, and everyone in the lab for their support and help.”

Deng is from Yibin City, Sichuan Province, in southwestern China. Sichuan is known as the hometown of pandas and famous for gourmet foods.

Deng has been a member of Assistant Professor James Moseley’s lab since 2010, studying cell growth and division using fission yeast as a model. There, he discovered novel mechanisms for cell growth and division resulting in three first-author papers and one second-author papers, which were published in prestigious journals.

This is a very competitive award and it has been given to a most deserving recipient, Moseley says. “It reflects and rewards Lin’s hard work as a graduate student. He has been a model for success because of his strong work ethic and never-ending scientific curiosity,” he adds. “Lin has made numerous discoveries about complex signaling networks that control cell growth, and has been a constant source of ideas and results for our entire lab. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with him. I’m extremely excited about his future career in science.”
