Meredith Cockerell talks about Dartmouth’s sports medicine department, the great student-athletes she encounters, and what keeps her busy when she’s not at work.
Job Title: Senior Athletic Trainer
How long have you been at Dartmouth?
I just started my fifth year here.
What path brought you to your field?
I have always been a fan of sports. Growing up, I was a pretty un-athletic child, so to stay as involved with sports as possible I started working in the athletic training room at my high school. I realized how much I enjoyed the atmosphere and decided to pursue athletic training in college. I have now been certified as a trainer for almost 10 years and continue to enjoy the highs and lows of my profession.
What’s at the heart of your role at Dartmouth?
I love keeping student-athletes healthy and helping them achieve the best athletic careers possible.
What’s your favorite part of working here?
I enjoy the caliber of students that Dartmouth College attracts. The student-athletes really are students first. They keep me on my toes with treatments and rehabilitation programs. They make me love coming to work every day.
As you’ve gotten to know the place and the people here, what surprises you about Dartmouth?
I am always surprised by how grateful the student-athletes are on a daily bases. They all show their gratitude in different ways—but it makes me love my job. I am also constantly surprised at how cold it is here! (I grew up in Texas.)
Any unusual projects you’ve taken on?
In addition to traveling and taking care of the field hockey and track and field teams, I have become the staff baker. I make a delicious treat for everyone’s birthday.
Beyond Dartmouth and after hours, what keeps you busy away from work?
I love to be outside and be active with my dog, Cooper. I also enjoy reading and working on my house.
