Dartmouth celebrates scientific research each May with a number of events, including the annual Karen E. Wetterhahn Science Symposium, named in honor of the late Karen E. Wetterhahn, a professor of chemistry and co-founder of the Women In Science Project (WISP) at Dartmouth.
The May 28 symposium opens with a keynote address by Kathleen White at 4:30 p.m. in Oopik Auditorium in the Class of 1978 Life Sciences Center. White, who leads national initiatives for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, will speak on “From Drought to Flood: Engineering for Climate Change.”
White’s speech will be followed by the annual poster session from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., featuring scientific research by Dartmouth undergraduates.
Thursday, May 21: The Comparative Literature Graduate Symposium starts at 4 p.m. today in Room 301 at the Black Family Visual Arts Center. The symposium features several panel discussions.
Friday, May 22: The Department of Music hosts the junior recital today at 4:30 p.m. in the Faulkner Recital Hall at the Hopkins Center. Also at the Hop, the student-produced production Dying City, directed by Emma Orme ’15, begins at 8 p.m. in Bentley Theater. Additional performances take place Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
Saturday, May 23: Today is Tuck’s 31st Annual Run for the Kids road race. The day includes a 10-kilometer race, 5-kilometer run, and 1-kilometer kids’ fun run. Proceeds benefit the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (CHaD), David’s House, and Child and Family Services of the Upper Valley. The Department of Music hosts the senior recital today at 11 a.m. in the Faulkner Recital Hall at the Hop. The Dartmouth College Gospel Choir performs at 2 p.m. in the Hop’s Spaulding Auditorium.
Sunday, May 24: For spring term 2015, student preachers from the Class of 2015 at the Tucker Foundation-sponsored Sunday night chapel service take on the theme “Dear Dartmouth,” writing a letter to the College reflecting on the past four years. Services take place at 5 p.m. every Sunday at Rollins Chapel.
Tuesday, May 26: The topic for today’s Sustainability Café is “Youth Leadership in International Climate Conversations.” Kelly McGlinchey ’12 and Leehi Yona ’16 will talk about their experience as youth delegates at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru. The discussion starts at 12:30 p.m. in the Paganucci Lounge at the Class of 1953 Commons. Also, photographer and documentary filmmaker Gillian Laub gives a lecture today, “Testimony and Southern Rites,” at 4:30 p.m. in the Hood Auditorium. Laub’s talk will be followed by a screening of her film Southern Rites at 5:30 p.m.
Wednesday, May 27: The President’s Undergraduate Research Symposium is from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the main hall of Berry Library. The symposium highlights undergraduate research, scholarship, and creativity through an informal poster session. President Phil Hanlon ’77 will open the event with a brief welcome.
