“Thankfully there’s an Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth as well as a Center for International Understanding, and they find fellows to work around the world on areas that are of interest to them,” says Sappho Gilbert, MPH ’14, in an interview with CBC Radio about the suicide prevention research she is doing among the Inuit of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. She is working with the Nunavut Embrace Life Council to research how area residents find help when they are under mental stress, reports CBC Radio.

With a Lombard Fellowship funded in part by the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, Gilbert studies mental wellness and resilience in a place that has “the second highest suicide rate in the world,” she says.

“I’m more interested in what it means for someone to go through a challenging time and to use resilience to their advantage so that they can rebuild and sustain their mental wellness,” she says. “I’m more interested in what is actually helping Nunavut residents out of difficult times and poor mental health.”
