“A brand new sensor—the Quanta Image Sensor (QIS)—now under development at Dartmouth’s Thayer School of Engineering could fundamentally revamp the field of low-light photography,” reported The Next Web.

The work on the sensor is being led by Eric Fossum, a professor of engineering, and Jiaju Ma, a graduate student. “The inventors are not just any random pair of whizbrains,” the story noted. Fossum has already made a name for himself in the field by developing the CMOS image sensor, “currently used in almost all cellphone and digital cameras, webcams, and medical imaging.”
